From March, PINs of ID-cards can only be replaced at the service points of the Police and Border Guard Board

From March, in connection with the change of manufacturer of ID-cards, PINs can only be replaced at the service points of the Police and Border Guard Board and the service will no longer be available at bank offices.

The Police and Border Guard Board has been issuing new ID-cards since December and has terminated the contract with their former partner. In this context, follow-up services will no longer be available in bank offices. As code cards can no longer be used for logging in to the internet banks of SEB and Swedbank as of February, the Police and Border Guard Board will continue to provide the option of replacing PINs in bank offices until the end of February so that people could adopt an alternative tool of authentication more conveniently. As of 1 March, the capability of digital authentication and giving signatures can be restored only at the service points of the Police and Border Guard Board.

"It is easy to forget PINs if you do not use e-services and digital signing regularly. Unfortunately, people do not always store the issued envelopes of PINs responsibly and often even discard them. It would be wise to keep the PINs in a safe place separate from the ID-card in case you forget the codes," said Eliisa Sau, chief expert at the Identity and Status Bureau of the Police and Border Guard Board.

Every month, about 4,000 people need help in recovering missing or forgotten PINs. According to Eliisa Sau, now is a good time to review your PINs, because soon, the period for filing income tax returns will begin, elections will start, and logging into an internet bank is no longer possible with a code card. "People often discover that they have lost their PINs when they try to perform a specific action. We recommend checking your codes now, so logging into e-services would be carefree. We also recommend adopting an alternative way of digital authentication, such as mobile-ID, to supplement your ID-card," said Sau.
