In the frosty weather, 500 sets of high-quality winter clothes were given to the children in shelters

Today, the final event of the charity campaign “High-quality winter clothes for 500 children in shelters" took place at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. This event summed up the charity campaign held for the twelfth time, during which high-quality winter clothes – overalls, jackets, ski pants, mittens and hats-scarves – were bought for the children staying in shelters.

Triin Lumi, CEO of the SEB Heategevusfond (SEB Charity Fund): “During the summer campaign of the Fund, we purchased 500 pairs of high-quality footwear for the shelters. But the frosty winter weather pointed out another trouble spot, as quite often the children staying in those institutions have only one universal coverall, which suits for spring and autumn, but is not suitable for wearing in the cold winter weather. The snow is never too soggy, the weather is never too cold and the wind too strong to enjoy the pleasures winter has to offer. As adults, we can take care that children wear clothes suitable for the weather and I am glad to say that the campaign carried out made it possible for us to give the children many wonderful winter days by acquiring high-quality winter clothes for the children staying in shelters.”

Dressing properly is not a matter only for the children in shelters. Clothing expert and product manager Annika Tuisk explained what the winter clothes of an active child should consist of: “Despite of a very cold weather, you should always be able to move yourself in your clothes. Undergarments and a fleece sweatshirt or a sweater under the jacket should be enough. The three-layered clothing system known from the sports world works wonderfully every day, the exterior layer protects from water and wind, the middle layer provides warmth and the undergarments keep the body dry. Clothes and footwear should fit (not be too large or too small) - a warm sock does not help much if there is not enough space in the footwear. And do not forget a hat, because the body loses a lot of the heat from the head.”

More than 150 people were present in the event from all over Estonia – from shelters in Tallinn, Ida-Virumaa, Harjumaa and Viljandimaa. Children took part in cheery sports games and built giant mittens, hats, scarves, etc. from snow.

Non-profit organisation SEB Heategevusfond was established to support the development and coping of children, whose parents do not care for them. The fund collects donations and carries out several projects all-year-round to support the children staying in shelters, co-ordinates counselling of foster families, grants scholarships and co-ordinates the mentor programme.
